Our Impact 2022-2023

Starting Over, Stopping Buses

Last year, enough young people in London were pushed into homelessness to fill a double decker bus every day. This year it might be enough to fill a tube train, every day.

Though the increase in numbers of young people attending New Horizon Youth Centre continues to rise, our teams are continuing to deliver incredible work to support every young person who walks through our doors.

Key statistics from 2022-2023:

This year we worked with 1,146 young people. With 37% identifying as female, 56% identifying as male, 73% as Black, Asian or minority ethic and 14% identified as LGBTQ.

We refocused our teams around 4 key areas: Housing, Health, Life skills and Safety to provide the best holistic services for young people. The impact has been huge, with over 500 people improving their mental health, 265 people receiving specialist support through our safety and outreach programme, and 559 young people taking part in our Life Skills Programme.

The safety team worked with 265 young people: 70 while in prison, 72 via the twice weekly street outreach services. The life skills programme had 559 young people: 143 attended an Independent Living Workshop, 120 completed our communications skills workshop, 177 received Jobs Education and Training support. The health team supported 507 young people to improve their mental health; 93 young people used our counselling service; 174 young people improved their physical health; 145 consultations were given by our nurse.

We know the key to a young person’s safety and wellbeing is a secure, safe and long term home. Therefore our Housing team was constantly in demand. They worked with:492 young people who benefitted from... 2,456 advice appointments. 211 young people were placed in emergency accommodation and... 171 were able to secure longer term housing.

Key Highlights from 2022-2023:

  • The Mayor of London visited our Youth Hub in Islington: 26 rooms for young people needing short term accommodation
  • We ran a 10 day #StopTheBus Campaign, driving a double decker bus around key monuments in London and hosting events to raise awareness of a double decker bus worth of young people becoming homeless everyday in London.
  • We rebranded and developed a new website!
