The #AutumnBudget brought some positive steps for the #PlanForThe136k campaign: Increasing spending for homelessness and rough sleeping by £233 million, a £10 minimum wage for 18-20s, and £500 million investment in affordable and social housing - but a lot was missing and not nearly enough to end youth homelessness. We are still calling for an end to the outdated benefit system to #MakeWorkPay for young people in supported housing. And for a youth specific chapter in the Government’s promised strategy to end homelessness.Join us to keep up the pressure to end youth homelessness for good #PlanForThe136k

It looks so good at the end 👀😋For World Food Day we are making Big Zuu’s Super Malt Ribs from his cookbook “Big Zuu’s Big Eats”! Demonstrated by @willpoulter and @itsbigzuu when they hosted a Supper Club for our young people this summer. IngredientsFor the dry rub- 2 tbsp all-purpose seasoning- 1 tsp garlic powder- 1 tsp dried thyme- 1 tbsp ground cumin- 1 tsp fine saltFor the short ribs- 1.5kg/3lb 5oz beef short ribs- 2 tbsp vegetable oil- 2 large onions, sliced- 2 garlic cloves, crushed- 2.5cm/1in piece fresh root ginger, peeled and grated- 1 Scotch bonnet chilli, pierced- 2 × 330ml bottles fizzy malt drink- 4 vegetable stock cubes, crumbled- 1 tbsp tomato ketchup- 1 tbsp runny honey1. To make the dry rub, mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl.2. To make the ribs, rub the dry rub mixture all over the ribs. Cover and marinate in the fridge for at least 2 hours and for up to 12 hours.3. In a large casserole, heat the oil over a medium heat. Add the onions until browned and softened. Add the garlic and ginger and fry for 2 minutes before adding the Scotch bonnet, malt drink and 200ml/7fl oz water. Add the stock cubes and bring to the boil.4. Preheat the oven to 170C/150C Fan/Gas 3. Place the marinated ribs in a large, deep roasting tin or ceramic or glass dish lined with kitchen foil. Pour over the malt and onion stock. Cover the tin or dish with kitchen foil and roast for 5–5½ hours until the ribs are super tender, checking and turning them a couple of times during cooking. Remove the ribs from the liquid and set them aside on a foil-lined roasting tin, covering with foil to keep warm. Turn the oven up to 240C/220C Fan/Gas 9.5. Strain the cooking liquid into a saucepan, pushing the oniony juices through the sieve as much as possible. Place over a high heat. Bring the liquid to a boil, whisk in the ketchup and honey and cook until reduced by half and thickened. Pour the thickened sauce over the short ribs and roast, uncovered, for 10 minutes to glaze.6. Serve the ribs immediately with the coleslaw, suya potatoes and cold bottles of fizzy malt drink.Link in bio for full recipe! #WorldFoodDay #WillPoulter #BigZuu #ribs #bbq
Food, mental health or creative arts? What would you be able to do if you had equal benefits? For under 25s at risk of homelessness, the benefits system is not fair. They don`t get the same housing benefit or universal credit and the amount of hours they are able to work is less that adults. So for World Homelessness Day and we are continuing the call to #EndYouthHomelessness by creating a fairer benefits system for young people affected by homelessness. #MakeWorkPay #PlanForThe136k #WorldHomelessnessDay

It is #BlackHistoryMonth and whilst this is time to reflect and celebrate the history of Black people and culture around the world and in the UK, we understand that much of this history has lead to real world, current consequences. One of these that we see acutely at New Horizon Youth Centre is around housing. Black families are much less likely to own their homes in the UK (20-36% are renting, compared with 16% of white households), due to a lack of generational wealth and social mobility, immigration policies and racism, amongst other things. So housing instability and homelessness is often more common amongst Black people. For example, last year 55% of the young people we supported were Black, but in London only 13.5% of people are Black.Earlier this year staff and young people from our service contributed to some valuable research by Herriot Watt University on the impact that homelessness has on young Black people in London. (full blog and report on our website)Through listening to stories and experiences of young people and support services, they found that young Black people face particular pressures with housing and have unique issues around homelessness. A reckoning with, and tackling, systemic racism would pave the way for better services, support and care for young Black people, so every young person in London can give their potential a home.
BAFTA winning chef @itsbigzuu, Hollywood actor @willpoulter and @nhyouthcentre came together to host an amazing BBQ for young people experiencing homelessness in London. New Horizon is the only open access service for young people affected by homelessness in London. Thanks Will and Zuu for supporting young people and New Horizon’s vital work keeping young people off the streets, safe, fed and housed. You can support New Horizon too by donating through the link in their story, bio and website!
